Melissa Theriault is an attorney and a Wyoming Developmental Disability Waiver case manager who has spent years working directly with people with disabilities, their attorneys, their case managers, their providers, and their families to support choice and self determination for all.
Melissa is the first attorney in Wyoming known to successfully terminate a guardianship through development and use of a Supported Decision Making Plan. Melissa provides training and education for attorneys, people with disabilities, and their families to understand guardianship, the impact of guardianship, and alternatives to guardianship - ensuring people receive the respect and dignity of choice whenever possible.
Jonathan Martins is an attorney and advocate who has worked with and represented people with intellectual and developmental disabilities people for over 20 years. He has helped people with disabilities receive the support they need to succeed in school, at work, at home, and in their communities.
In 2013, Jonathan represented Margaret “Jenny” Hatch in the “Justice for Jenny” case – the first trial to hold that a person has the right to use Supported Decision-Making to make her own life choices instead of being subjected to a permanent, plenary guardianship. Since then, Jonathan has led self-determination projects in New York, Nebraska, Ohio, California, Virginia, Vermont, Missouri, and Kansas. He has also educated and trained tens of thousands of older adults, people with disabilities, families, and professionals across the country and written over 50 books, articles, and other publications dedicated to helping people with disabilities lead their best, most independent lives.
